Great Wall Interview | Guo Jian, Secretary of the Party Committee of HBU: HBU Starts a New Journey of Building a First-Class University

On October 18th, 2021, HBU will celebrate its 100th anniversary.

On October 4th, Great Wall New Media invited Guo Jian, Secretary of the Party Committee of HBU, to the “Great Wall Interview” at the Kunyu Pavilion of HBU’s Library. He talked about the century-old history of HBU, the tradition and characteristics of education, the red genes, and the advantages of running the university, advanced concepts, development opportunities, etc.

Founded in 1921, HBU has been inherited and continued in a hundred years of development. It once enjoyed the reputation of “the best industrial and commercial university in north China”, creating many precedents in higher education in Hebei province. Since the beginning of the new century, HBU has achieved leap-forward development: In 2005, it became the first university jointly constructed by Hebei Province and the Ministry of Education; in 2012, it became the only university that entered the “Central and Western Regions to Enhance Comprehensive Strength Project” in Hebei Province; in 2016, it became a national key construction university of “One Province, One University” in the central and western regions, and entered the “Double First-Class” construction of a first-level university in Hebei Province; in 2018, it was successfully selected as a university “co-constructed by the Ministry of Education and the Hebei Province.”

In the past 100 years, HBU has endured great hardships in pioneer work, persistent during major changes in the adjustment of faculties and the relocation of the university, worked hard after the Reform and Opening Up, forged ahead in the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, all of which forged the school motto of “seeking truth from facts”, demonstrated the unique character of a century-old institution, and formed a huge cultural heritage advantage.

“Under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, HBU grasps the new development stage, implements the new development concept, builds a new development pattern, adheres to strengthen moral education and cultivate people, achieves high-quality development, and continues to start a new journey of building a first-class university.” Guo Jian said in the interview.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, HBU has focused on the fundamental question of “who to train, how to train, and for whom”, explored “integration” and “Drip Irrigation” education models, and aimed at “nurturing students with a solid foundation”, which helps to form HBU’s characteristics of strengthening moral education and cultivating people. At present, HBU has 17 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 47 first-level discipline master programs, 33 professional master programs, and 95 undergraduate programs, covering the entire chain of undergraduate, master, and doctoral programs, and an integrated talent training system. It is also one of the most comprehensive universities in China.

Guo Jian said that 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. Standing at the new historical starting point, HBU will thoroughly study and implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era, adhere to the fundamental task of strengthening moral education and cultivating people, take root in the land of Yanzhao Region, aim at the goal of “double first-class” construction, and grasp the opportunity of “co-constructed by the Yinzhou Ministry of Education and the Hebei Province” to train more socialist builders.
